More and more people are asking an AI instead of scrolling a page of results. “Who’s a good plumber near me?” “Best place for a roast in Ormskirk?” And increasingly, they’re getting a straight answer with a few businesses named.
If you run a local business, that can feel like one more thing to worry about. Here’s the reassuring bit: you almost certainly don’t need to do anything new.
AI leans on the same signals you’re already working
When an AI recommends a local business, it isn’t pulling names out of thin air. It’s leaning on the same information that already decides your local ranking:
- Your Google Business Profile — categories, service areas, whether it looks active
- Your reviews — how many, how good, how recent
- Your consistency across the web — the same name, address and phone everywhere
- Clear content on your site that plainly says what you do and where
Sound familiar? It’s the exact groundwork that gets you into the Google map. Do that properly and you’re also doing the work that gets you into the AI answers. There’s no separate “AI SEO” you need to buy.
What does change
A couple of things are worth knowing.
Clarity beats cleverness. AI answers pull from content that plainly and specifically answers a question. Vague, keyword-stuffed pages that were written to game old-school search don’t help here — a page that clearly says “we’re a family-run electrician covering Southport and Formby, here’s what we do” does.
Structured information helps. Things like a proper, accurate business listing and clear FAQ-style content make it easy for an AI to understand and quote you. Again — that’s good practice anyway.
Reviews carry even more weight. When an AI vouches for a business, it’s often reflecting a genuine consensus. A steady stream of real reviews is part of how you become that consensus.
The honest take
Nobody can promise you a spot in an AI’s answer — the systems are new and they change. Anyone selling you a guaranteed “get found in ChatGPT” package is guessing.
But the direction of travel is clear and it’s good news: the businesses that get found in AI answers are, overwhelmingly, the ones that already did local SEO properly. Solid profile, real reviews, consistent details, clear content.
That’s the whole of what I do — get North West businesses genuinely, durably found, in the map today and the AI answers as they grow.
